About the program

The department aims to prepare qualified human energies in the field of various engineering and environmental applications in order to spread awareness of the importance of environmental risks and engineering foundations in construction and reconstruction, and to harness all the capabilities available in the department to serve community members and achieve continuous support of information in achieving the goals of development plans and the Kingdom’s vision 2030. The department aims to prepare competencies Scientific and skilled in the field of engineering and environmental geology serving the community and the Kingdom's trends in the field of environmental preservation and attention to urban development. During the four-year stage, the student studies various courses and obtains extensive training in the field of engineering and environmental geology, after which he graduates to engage in the labor market in one of the governmental or private agencies. The bachelor program in the department is internationally accredited.

Program objectives

  1. Students will learn the basics of engineering geology, geological locations, earth materials, various geological processes, selection of suitable sites for construction and reconstruction, geological resources and the effects of engineering projects on the environment.
  2. The student will learn about the types of natural hazards: such as earthquakes, volcanic activities, plate tectonics, flood hazards, erosion and cavities processes and the causes of their occurrence and ways to deal with them.
  3. The student will develop his concept of types and conditions of foundation construction, theories of bearing capacity in shallow foundations, behavior of cohesive and loose soils, deep foundations, earth pressures and lateral supports, seepage analysis and slope stability, and field applications.
  4. The student will learn about the types of rock masses, stress-strain relationships, methods of identifying strong rocks and discontinuous surfaces, in addition to the physical and mechanical properties of rocks and the nature and engineering properties of discontinuous surfaces.
  5. The student will understand engineering geological considerations, describe soil and rock masses, classify rock masses for engineering purposes, engineering geological maps and their applications, and will also learn about ways to improve rocks and soil such as filling, drains and soil strengthening.
  6. The student will learn the study methods of engineering sites, drilling and bore equipment and their applications in soil and rocks, taking disturbed and undisturbed samples, performing on-site tests to determine the strength of soil or rocks, in addition to laboratory tests of samples collected from sites, writing reports, and interpreting the engineering geological characteristics of the sites.
  7. The student will become familiar with engineering geological considerations when examining highways, bridges, slopes, dams, tunnels, rivers, beaches, marshes, sand dunes, and selected urban sites. Methods for analyzing and displaying engineering geological data. Writing engineering geological reports and case studies reports.
Program admission requirement (general conditions)

Students must complete 72 credit units of university and faculty requirements to place a request for admission to the program. When students successfully finish the 6th semester (equivalent to 98 credit units) their application is processed. Students are admitted to the program if their GPA is 3.0/5.0 or more.
